I can confirm your suspicion, Mike: here in Oxford they have just updated IDL
to 6.4, and the system does not crash anymore. The reason why it started
recently to crash is that they recently applied a security path to X11, and
the latter was "colliding" with IDL.
Many thanks to everybody for the suggestions. I will check ViSiT, as soon as I
can.
