By adding the light from the two telescopes destructively, the light from the star is "nulled," that is it is cancelled out. The planet's light then shows up in the interference pattern. As the interferometer rotates, the planet moves in and out of the fringes, which modulates the signal detected, depending on the distance from planet to star.
